Jack Endino - Permanent Fatal Error

Jack Endino Cover.jpg

WTR 003 - IDC Cat # 0056

"Permanent Fatal Error": A new sledgehammer rock record from Seattle's legendary musician/producer Jack Endino, in which he re-emerges from a long silence to show the young-uns how it is done. Some biting lyrics, but no profanity, as his obscene guitar playing is sufficient to get the message across. Some songs stray into old-school metal/punk territory (Jack admits he has Lemmy's autograph!), but most of it is firmly in the Alternative Rock camp... but with very loud guitars. We don't know what else to call it but Loud Rock. If you ever liked any of the great rock records from Seattle, this stands with the best of them... and for good reason: Jack himself helped make most of those records...

Jack Endino was the man down in the engine room for the Seattle Music juggernaut of the early 90s, and it's almost certain you own some of the zillion records he's had his production mitts on since those years. You might own Nirvana's "Bleach" or heard recent records he's produced by the Makers, Hot Hot Heat, Zeke, Black Halos, Harkonen, Les Hell On Heels, Boss Martians, or the amazing Gits reissues. You may have seen "HYPE!" in which Jack's the guy making the most sense.

What you may not recall is that before all the Seattle Greek Tragedy stuff, Jack was the kickass guitarist for the criminally underrated, way-ahead-of-their-time band Skin Yard. Not quite punk, metal, psych, or grunge, and not exactly art rock, Skin Yard confounded everyone for 5 albums, 1985-1992, retiring "just when things started to get really idiotic around here", as Jack says today. Jack saw where his bread was buttered and let the world beat a path to his studio door.

But as the 90's wore on, Jack grew impatient with the state of Rock (and of the world), and started playing again. Some gigs with Wellwater Conspiracy helped him get his chops back. Now Wondertaker Records is proud to present to you "Permanent Fatal Error", in which the musician Jack Endino finally returns, with some formidable friends helping him out. Jack's mad as hell and he's not going to take it any more...

Peacedogman.com says it best...

Y'know....I really tried. I don't think you people have any clue how hard we try to be objective around here. I mean, the very best no-BS reviews is what it's all about. And with this latest creation by my buddies Sluggo & Rob's newly formed Wondertaker label, I didn't want to be unfairly biased by any preconceived notions. So I left the liner notes to this puppy far, far away so's there wouldn't be any cheating . But needless to say, right at track three....it was "whoa, backup!" time. What was that song with the ROSE TATTOO vibe? I gotta hear it again! Is that slide guitar at the end of the track? Sure enough, it was the GRANNIES "Chain Wallet" grabbing hold of my subconscious and giving it a good shake 'n twist. Seriously, THE GRANNIES are just about my favorite punk rock 'n roll band right now... as subtle as an engine block dropped on yer foot. Plus, they're even worse after a rowdy day of cruising the mall for moth balls and hard candies....

Now, as punk comps go, there are a few that are sacred to me, and a ton that are dismissible (and flushable...in case you were wondering. Yes, it is possible. Just remember to break twice and you'll prevent clogging). A lot of these comps have a couple of good tracks, and tons of filler jammed in-between. Well, this smokin' collection is extremely light on filler....in fact there's hardly any. What the listener does get with "Death Rattle and Roll Volume One" is a whirling teacup ride of potent riffs, metallic solos, gritty lyrics, and solid songwriting from 15 artists. I particularly enjoyed the two minutes of CHUCK BERRY swellness that is "No Money Down" by the BLACK FURIES. Good drum sound on that track too...meaty and crisp (the same way I like my bacon). And what the hell is with "Work Weak" by the MIDNIGHT BOMBERS?? I thought it was one of my long lost LPs by THE FREEZE or something like that! That track, along with many others on this comp, scratches my Reagan-era hardcore itch just like the classics. And I don't even think I have to describe the coolness of the track "I Drive Like An Ass" by dogman darlings EVERYTHING MUST GO...do I? We'll just let the bands' kickass reputation and the song title paint the picture. The bottom line is that "Death Rattle and Roll, Volume One" is going to stay in my player for months....or at least until the new GRANNIES record finally comes out. By the way... the GRANNIES record did come out since this was published. It is available now from IDC!

The Grannies - Erected Lady Man

WTR 002 -2 / IDC Cat#0040

Sluggo, who you may remember as the dude making Hullabaloo flyers at the counter of Charrette in Harvard Square in 1988, or possibly as the guy who runs San Fran superrock dealers Wondertaker Records (formerly Dead Teenager records, formerly the home of Dirty Power), has a rip-snorting punk n' rollin' band of his own, The Grannies. They are called the Grannies 'cuz that's how they dress, see, in over-sized flower-print house dresses and old-folks make-up and white wigs, and like, walkers and canes and shit.

There is no good reason for this, so honestly, don't try and suss it out. It's simply tzhe worst band gimmick since a buncha Christian puffballs dressed up like bumblebees, and believe me, the Grannies KNOW it, it's just too fuckin' late to stop now. Of course, you can't actually HEAR how they're dressed when yr listening to this record, so mebbe forget everything I just said, for this album will kick yr wrinkly old ass halfway across the bingo hall. Eschewing the speed-trial flail of their previous outings, on "Erected Lady Man" (ha ha!), the Grannies toss in all manner of great rock n' roll song - ya get the bitchin' Twin-Tone-esque roots n' roll of the (swear to Christ) touching pseudo-ballad "The Wrong Song", the 70's thunderboogie express of "Drainpipe", the Dolls-y swagger-glam of "Teenage Kicks", the Motor City meltdown of biker-scuzzfest "Crime Still Pays" - and lotsa fast n' nasty stabs of punk-ass speed rock in between.

Best of all, regardless of what mode they're in, whether it's sincere rock revivalists or snotty, tranny-granny punk rock assholes, they lay on the hooks and the howls and the cock-rockin' guitar solos like...like they're not even dressed like arthritic 70 year old broads at all. Trust me on this one, as soon as the nurse is done giving you a sponge bath, tell her to get you a copy of this record. It's almost as good as those awesome big blue pills they give you whenever you get caught jerking off in the TV room.
