Pay Day

ACT 0001- IDC Cat # 0085

I’ll always remember the sun rising from the Indian Ocean in Jeffreys Bay that first morning in July. Allegedly winter, an unusual heat wave appeared creating warmth throughout the nights. The famed Billabong surf contest was occurring, but for me, the main event was meeting the Roots Rockers. I had known the band about fifteen minutes before we began to playóa one-shot session, maybe their one chance given such limited opportunity. Kwanzamo is Roots Rockers Hometown, the "township" in Humansdorp rested in an area known as Kouga.

It’s ruff inna ghetto down there, tin shacks with no running water, bass strapped on the back with wire, the same back that has always worked hard for next to nothing with little appreciation.

It’s Payday, and I don’t mean the $15 a day one is lucky to make in South Africa. I mean within this musical canvas is pure joy and fyah, the colors those of hope, gratitude and a desire to connect with all the sufferahs worldwide. Notice the absence of bitterness or a victim stance. Here is our

opportunity to listen, not only to the vocals or arrangements, but for the Ubuntu Spirit. Ubuntu means "showing power to the people", "Spirit rising". Listen for that, my friends, for therein lies a truth, a heart’s treasure; it resonates with the hope of all of us who have chosen to live in the light of the Most High and want our earth and itís people to heal.

It is my honor to serve at the pleasure of the Kwanzamo Roots Rockers. Nadyak Thanda. That means I love you.

Bruce Lincoln Benjamin
