Monkey vs. Robot, Man vs. Machine
BMM- 0001 IDC Cat # 0090
Debut Double EP (16 Tracks in all!) from bace135!
Monkey Vs. Robot, Man Vs. Machine is the debut album from bace135, the San Francisco, MC and producer who throws himself into the water with a double EP; two EPs worth of ambitious music on one disc. On Monkey vs. Robot, bace135 takes you on a nostalgic trip by way of memory invoking instrumental pieces. Interesting horn, string, and synth arrangements provide an IDM(ish) sounding soundtrack for the listener’s mental journey. On Man vs. Machine, bace135 takes to the mic over a series of thick, layered beats and emphatically reveals his thought process. This is positive, conscious, independent minded Hip Hop that is not afraid to push the boundaries of what Hip Hop is supposed to sound like, yet stays relevant and true to the traditions of the Hip Hop culture.
Hip Hop is not dead!" proclaims MC and producer bace135. As a faithful fan of the underground, and dedicated Hip Hop practitioner, bace135 has taken it upon himself to spread the gospel of those toiling below the surface of what has become known as commercial Hip Hop. Whether it is organizing and promoting shows for the local underground, putting out compilation albums, or hosting the Sunday School Show ñ an internet radio show, bace135 has put countless dollars and hours of time into shining some light on deserving, yet unrecognized, Hip Hop artists. Now with the completion and release of his own debut double EP, Monkey Vs. Robot, Man Vs. Machine, bace135 is ready to find a little light for himself.
Hailing from San Francisco, bace135 is eager to show a different side of Hip Hop than is usually associated with artists from the SFC. "When you think of cats coming out of San Francisco," says bace, "you probably think of folks like San Quinn, JT, Rappin 4Tay, and even cats like Guce. But while my music is influenced by these rappers, and you can hear it in the roots of my music, I still have a very distinct, different sound." It is a sound that stretches beyond the traditional expectations of what Hip Hop should be, yet stays true to the culture, and does not wander off into the land of the avant-garde. Gone are the samples, and in comes varied arrangements of pianos, strings, horns, and synths.
As an artist and Hip Hop entrepreneur, bace135 has traveled a path filled with false starts and pot holes. He first dabbled with writing rhymes in high school, but did not approach the art of emceeing seriously until after he graduated from college. After a couple years of honing his craft on the mic, and simultaneously experimenting with beats and soundscapes, bace put out an albums worth of concoctions in the truest sense of DIY; CDs were burned on the home computer, and inserts were printed discreetly at the day job. He understands the key success is to put out one quality album after another.
